Faculty Members Thün and Velikov Contribute to Definitive New Book Investigating the Territory of High Performance Homes
Associate Professor Geoffrey Thün and Assistant Professor Kathy Velikov have recently authored two chapters in Design and Construction of High-Performance Homes: Building Envelopes, Renewable Energy and Integrated Practice, edited by Franca Trubiano and published by Routledge.
Borrowing a set of terms from the discipline of biology now commonplace in architectural design, “Responsive Building Envelopes: Characteristics and Evolving Paradigms” articulates a conceptual paradigm and working vocabulary for the development of high-performance building skins that are smart, intelligent, interactive and responsive. “North House: Climate Responsive Envelope and Control Systems” presents one of the volume’s residential case study projects, explicating high performance objectives, environmentally responsive envelope design, hybrid passive and active energy systems and interactive systems to manage the home’s energy profile.
