Master of Science in Architecture alumnus receives A’Design Award
Master of Science in Architecture graduate Ammar Kalo (M.S.’13) was awarded a Silver A’Design Award for his “STRATUM” folding chair. The furniture piece was designed and produced during an ARCH 702 – Material Engagement class taught by Professor Wes McGee.
Fabricated using the 5-axis CNC milling machine in the Taubman College FabLab, the Stratum chair was born out of a desire to create a piece of furniture that expresses its function and the material it uses in a very organic fashion.
Its unique formal and visual qualities are born out of the ways in which the plywood strata layers are carved to highlight the chair’s functional features. Its termination at the ground with three legs also accentuates the design’s edginess and give it a sense of delicate balance.
Kalo received a Master of Science in Architecture Degree with concentrations in Digital Technologies and Material Systems from Taubman College. After graduating, he founded KALO, an architecture and design studio focused on using digital fabrication while maintaining distinctive ‘hand-crafted’ qualities.
