Career Fair connects Taubman College students with future employers, showcases opportunities

The Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning hosted 33 firms, over 60 recruiters, and an abundance of Taubman College architecture, urban planning, urban design and real estate students at this year’s Career and Networking Fair. Held on Friday, March 20, 2015 the fair connected students with potential employers while allowing them to network and explore a wide variety of career opportunities.

Taubman College students are known for their drive and passion, according to Jason Ford, representing Populous, a global design practice located in Kansas City, Missouri.  Ford was interviewing students in architecture, urban planning and urban design degree programs at the fair. “Populous is looking for someone with passion – not only about architecture, but about the profession, about what we do, in terms of making facilities that draw people together,” added Ford.

Taubman alumni Lee Devore (M.Arch ’06) also attended the fair to interview architecture and urban design students representing HLW International with offices in New York, New Jersey, Los Angeles, London and Shanghai. HLW designs buildings for global companies, including Under Armour and Food Network. “People is really what drives what we do and how we do things…The [Taubman] program is excellent. Students who come out of here are generally very well prepared, and we’ve had a lot of success with Michigan students.”

Taubman College alumni Gordon Warwick (M.Arch. ’14) attended the fair as a recruiter for Chicago-based Elston Window & Wall. As a recent graduate, Warwick was aware of the anxiety that the Career and Networking Fair can produce. His advice to students on the other side of the table? “Be open minded, and conversational. Relax a little. We want to have fun conversations about design with you.”

Firms present at the fair included CannonDesign, CooperCarry, Gensler, Hamilton Anderson, HKS, LSM, SOM and Studio Gang Architects. This is the largest career fair in recent years, according to career services manager and fair organizer, Beth Berenter.
