Batterman quoted in Slate on regional transit issue
Joel Batterman, Ph. D. student in Urban and Regional Planning, was quoted in an article, “Can America’s Worst Transit System be Saved?” on the Slate website, posted June 7, 2016. The article discusses the shortcomings of the meager public transit system in Detroit and the unveiling of a regional master plan to link Detroit, the suburbs, the airport, Ypsilanti, and Ann Arbor into a comprehensive network of light rail and buses. The Regional Transit Master Plan may be on the ballot in November 2016. The plan proposes bus rapid transit routes and a commuter rail link between Ann Arbor and Detroit, as well as an integrated cross-county bus system. Batterman, speaking in his role as coordinator of the Motor City Freedom Riders, an organization that advocates better regional transit, emphasized the importance of the support of county leaders to put this plan on the ballot for the benefit of the entire region.
