Junghans Promoted To Associate Professor With Tenure

On May 18, 2017, the Board of Regents voted to promote Lars Junghans from assistant professor without tenure to associate professor with tenure in the architecture program.

Junghans has garnered an international reputation in the interdisciplinary field of sustainable building systems. Almost uniquely, he has been able to combine advanced work in structural engineering and computerized building control with creative design aesthetics. His work on the prizewinning “Concept 22/26” office building – the first in a cold climate [Austria] to maintain temperatures between 22ºC [72ºF] and 26ºC [79ºF] through a radical energy-saving replacement of conventional heating, cooling, and ventilation systems – points to a new synthesis of design and sustainability. Junghans is an accomplished researcher and scholar who has made significant contributions to the field of building science and the subfields of sustainable building systems design, building systems optimization, and building physics. He effectively brings an intelligent, innovative and strategic approach to his teaching and is an active contributor providing valuable service to the college and profession.

Junghans joined Taubman College on September 1, 2010, as an assistant professor of architecture, without tenure. His appointment was the result of a university cluster hire on the sustainable built environment with Taubman College, the School of Natural Resources and the Environment, and the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering as the participating units. Prior to his appointment at Taubman College, Junghans held an appointment as a lecturer at the University of Liechtenstein from 2008-2010. Additionally, Junghans’ professional experience includes working as a project manager for the engineering office TeamGMI located in Vaduz, Liechtenstein (2006-2010), consulting for the Swiss firm Baumschlager & Eberle Architecture (2006-2010), and research for the firm Architecture, Energy and Environment in Wallisellen, Switzerland (2001-2002). He received a Doctor of Sciences degree at ETH Zurich in Switzerland in 2005 and a Diploma in Architecture at the Technical University Braunschweig in Germany in 2001.
