ABRONS, FURE, MILLER, AND MORAN EXHIBIT “CLASTIC ORDER” AT CCA’S “DESIGNING MATERIAL INNOVATION” IN FALL 2017
Assistant Professors Thom Moran, Ellie Abrons, Adam Fure, and Meredith Miller (T+E+A+M) will be exhibiting “Clastic Order” at the “Designing Material Innovation” Exhibition at California College of the Arts (CCA) in the fall of 2017. The Clastic Order builds upon ongoing research that combines plastic waste and inorganic aggregates into new building material. The project incorporates the waste products of the construction industry and post-industrial plastics. Crushed brick, concrete, and glass form the aggregate, while plastic forms the binding matrix. The Clastic Order is the first full-scale installation made from “post rock,” a hybrid material made of waste polymers and inorganic aggregates. Developed within an architectural research initiative led by T+E+A+M principals Thom Moran and Meredith Miller, post rock is their recreation of an emerging geological material called plastiglomerate.
“Designing Material Innovation” is an exhibition of full-scale architectural prototypes and pavilions that exemplify new approaches to material, fabrication, and design. Designed and produced through collaborations between architects and industry partners, these works combine technological innovation in materials research and fabrication with aesthetic and ethical approaches to form and appearance. Other installations include “THINNESS” (APTUM Architecture / CEMEX Research Group), Casting Shell (Andrew Kudless / Matsys / CCA), Buoyant Ecologies Float Lab (Adam Marcus / Variable Projects and Margaret Ikeda and Evan Jones / Assembly Design / with Kreysler & Associates and CCA), and McKnelly Megalith (Matter Design / MIT). The exhibition will open on September 28, 2017 and run through December 22 and is designed by former Taubman College Oberdick Fellow, Clark Thenhaus. It will also encompass a day-long symposium (October 27, 2017) convening leading figures including a keynote lecture by Philippe Block on October 26.
