This project explores the cultural significance of local food systems while supporting small farms at Eastern Market in Detroit. Small farms face intense supply and demand consolidation, which strains operational costs and obscures their pivotal role in local food systems. Our goal was to alleviate distribution challenges, increase farmer income, and build resilience among these farms.

We utilized the existing nonprofit network within Eastern Market and its connections with local farmers. The EMCA program leverages this established client base to give back to producers. According to our business plan, participating farmers receive an average of $33,000 in additional income, providing vital preseason payments and an alternative financial stream.

EMCA also aims to uplift the local food system by centering its narrative around farmers. EMCA can become “food storytellers,” generating culture around Eastern Market produce. By spotlighting farmers and their goods with tailored media, we hope to excite locals and build food sovereignty.
