Newtrality
UT 430 Strategic Design & Urban Systems 6
Newtrality is a set of responses aiming to achieve carbon neutrality for Detroit's Eastern Market by building local farmer’s resilience, consolidating produce transportation, and spreading awareness on carbon footprint in Scope 1 and 2. To achieve this, a simulation and a transportation app are made, with the former focusing on raising farmers' awareness on their own carbon footprint and the latter focusing on establishing an Eastern-Market-Partnership-coordinated consolidated transportation system that combines cargo and farmer trip from their farms to Eastern Market to reduce carbon footprint in Scope 3, specifically transportation. We hope to move beyond the status quo of carbon blind spots and begin building a more sustainable future through improved everyday practices, and harness the power of collective routing among vendors and extend this model to other farmers’ markets, moving together to a carbon neutral near future.
