Why did you choose Taubman College as the right program for you?
When I first visited Taubman, I immediately felt like it was a place I would thrive. The faculty and students I met were incredibly welcoming, and the culture felt collaborative and supportive, which was a stark contrast to some of the other colleges I looked at.
What is special or excites you about the Taubman community?
I really appreciate the ways in which Taubman has allowed me to explore architectural thinking beyond traditional practice. I’ve gotten the chance to take engaging courses — such as those on affordable housing development, the history of sustainability in architecture, and the politics of building codes — that have allowed me to consider architecture’s implications more broadly. Additionally, there are lots of extracurriculars and student groups that have given me the opportunity to work on creative work and develop meaningful relationships outside of class.
If applicable, tell us about studio culture – what is inspiring or innovative or unique?
I really appreciate how tight-knit the studio culture is, creating a supportive and personal atmosphere within the larger university. The small class sizes add to this, allowing for more engaged discussions and meaningful faculty interaction. While you may be working in the largest continuous studio space in the world, it still feels like an incredibly tight-knit community, and there are always events, things to do, and lots of free food.
Describe your experience with faculty and professional staff during your time at Taubman?
The faculty and staff at Taubman are not only knowledgeable but also incredibly supportive and welcoming. Being able to bump into faculty members and have informal conversations about projects and ideas has been a meaningful part of my experience. I’ve also had the opportunity to collaborate with faculty on research projects, which have further developed these relationships.
How has Taubman’s career and professional development support prepared you for a successful career in your chosen field?
Taubman provides extensive career support that has helped me feel more prepared for the professional world. The school facilitates connections with a strong alumni network, opening up opportunities for mentorship and career guidance. I’ve also benefited from resume and portfolio reviews, which have given me valuable insights.
What benefits have you experienced being part of the University of Michigan?
Being part of the University of Michigan means having access to a vast network of alumni and resources. The ability to take courses outside of the architecture school has expanded my perspective and skill set. Additionally, the university’s vast extracurricular opportunities ensure there is something for everyone.
What do you like most about being part of the Ann Arbor community?
Ann Arbor feels like a nice balance between a vibrant city and a close-knit community. I love spending time at the farmers’ market and going to parks, coffee shops, and cultural events.
What advice would you give prospective students as they consider Taubman College?
When considering Taubman College, or any college, take the time to explore the courses offered and the faculty’s research interests. This will give you insight into the diverse opportunities available and help you see how the program can align with your personal and professional goals. Architecture is a broad field, and I felt that Taubman would really allow me to explore different directions within it.
What are your plans after graduation?
After graduation, I plan to pursue a Master’s degree in Architecture. I hope to get licensed and work towards starting my own firm.
Additional advice or thoughts you’d like to share with prospective students?
Be yourself, and advocate for yourself. Taubman is a place that encourages curiosity and exploration, so take advantage of every opportunity to shape your own education and engage with the broader architectural discourse.
