Why did you choose Taubman College as the right program for you?
The professors and their diverse interests were the main reason I chose Taubman. The work that was being done, the fabrication facilities, the elective choices, and the different paths that were pursuable was something I was interested in. The opportunities available now that I am immersed in the culture of Taubman have superseded my immediate expectations.

What is special or excites you about the Taubman community?
The Taubman community is energetic and experimental! Being a part of it has allowed me to think innovatively about the built environment and its interaction with communities, the natural environment, and the potential for fabricating materials and their purposes. The community at Taubman has been a delight to learn from and interact with.

If applicable, tell us about studio culture – what is inspiring or innovative or unique?
Studio culture is collaborative, healthy, and enjoyable! I look forward to working around others in the studio where we have a flexible space that is oriented towards working while also giving us a place to enjoy the culture of Taubman. A culture that enables us to find agency in our own work and goof off afterward!

Describe your experience with faculty and professional staff during your time at Taubman?
The faculty here are incredible. I have had numerous positive experiences with professors who have curated a friendly and approachable environment. I feel comfortable engaging in conversations, scheduling time to meet, and talking with them about interdisciplinary studies among countless other things. The range of interests the professors have has been ideal for me in crafting an experience I want out of my graduate degree. Very thankful for the teachers and mentors that I have had!

How has Taubman’s career and professional development support prepared you for a successful career in your chosen field?
My academic background is in the environmental sciences and soil and water science, with a professional background in agriculture which introduced me to a different avenue through navigating a career. Having professional experience has been helpful, but Taubman has provided me with professional resources in regard to connections with professors and past students in the field of architecture. Professional practice and other classes have taught me about the logistics of the field.

What benefits have you experienced being part of the University of Michigan?
The resources the University has to offer are vast. Engaging with the FABLab and woodshop has been instrumental in my development of understanding the way materials interact. The libraries and librarians have been incredible resources as well as the proximity of resources, transportation, and things to do and see.

What do you like most about being part of the Ann Arbor community?
The Ann Arbor community is friendly and fits my lifestyle well. Being able to bike and walk to most places is great and the infrastructure they have set up for it is safe and inviting. I enjoy the amenities the city has, plenty of coffee shops and good food, and an emphasis on eating local, incorporating art and music, and creating safe spaces for the community. The local rock climbing gym is great, too!

What advice would you give prospective students as they consider Taubman College?
Navigate the school as yourself. Lived experiences are important, and the diversity those bring to the college is so important in continuing to enhance the school’s culture.

What are your plans after graduation?
I hope to focus on the re-use and repurposing of existing structures with an emphasis on green building materials and techniques. The climate is very important to me and I am determined to pursue its longevity.
