Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning announced August 18, 2010, the appointment of Milton Curry as Associate Professor of Architecture, with tenure, and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Strategic Initiatives. The appointment is effective September 1, 2010, subject to approval by the Regents of the University.
Curry is considered within the architecture discipline as one of his generation’s preeminent architectural educators, scholars and editors focusing on issues of race, architecture and urbanism. His research, writing and courses create connections among various perspectives on architectural theory and broader issues of urbanization, race and culture.
Currently, Curry is an associate professor of architecture and theory at Cornell University where he has taught since 1995, and where he has held numerous leadership roles including serving for six years as director of the Cornell Council for the Arts, and director of Case Studies in Urban Development. At Cornell, Curry was also an affiliate faculty in the Cornell Program in Real Estate and the Cornell Center for the Study of Inequality. Curry is also editor-in-chief of CriticalProductive Journal.
He is also principal of OrbitMCA designstudio, a design practice he founded in 1995. Curry was the co-founder, editor and publisher of AppendX Journal from 1992-1999. This publication series is thought of as a turning point in the discipline of architecture. AppendX is widely regarded as having expanded the cannon of the discipline by addressing the relationship between architecture and cultural identity and by forging new interdisciplinary connections between architecture, literature and the fine arts.
“We are fortunate to have been able to recruit Milton Curry to Taubman College,” said Dean Monica Ponce de Leon. “The originality of his research is rare, as is the fact that he has also remained active in practice. His scholarship and teaching will complement our curricular offerings and will help enhance areas in our curriculum, particularly at the intersection of Architecture and the Social Sciences.”
Curry will expand the college’s interdisciplinary initiatives and working special initiatives to broaden the engagement with urban issues.
