Research and Creative Practice Director Gabriel Harp to receive OVPR research award

Taubman College’s Gabriel Harp has been selected to receive a Research Staff Support Recognition Award from the University of Michigan Office of the Vice President for Research.

Harp is among 12 staff members from across the university being recognized by OVPR for significant contributions to U-M’s research enterprise. This year’s recipients represent nine schools, colleges, and units. Awardees will also receive a $1,000 personal honorarium.

“Our staff members are a driving force of everything we do as a research organization,” said Arthur Lupia, vice president for research and innovation. “We are able to achieve exceptional things because we have exceptional people at every level of our organization. I am very grateful for their incredible dedication and skill in supporting our collective mission to serve the world through research.”

Harp’s review committee at Taubman College praised his work helping faculty, staff, and students secure funding from new sources, communicate across disciplines and sectors, and build successful teams.

“He has earned the buy-in of faculty to compete for unfamiliar funding, resulting in senior faculty earning successful first-time funding applications to NSF, NEH, other external funders, and internal competitions,” said Kathy Velikov, associate dean for research and creative practice.

“Coming from a background in the sciences, art, and arts research, Gabriel is a disciplinary multi-linguist and cultural interpreter, with skills to teach architects and urban designers the craft of writing for diverse audiences, from federal agencies to local communities,” said Sharon Haar, professor of architecture.

“His ability to identify complementary expertise, convene the right partners, and cultivate trust has resulted in cohesive and highly competitive teams,” said Ana Paula Pimentel Walker, associate professor in Urban and Regional Planning.

Nearly 140 U-M staff have been awarded for their expertise and commitment to the university’s research activities and operations since OVPR launched its Research Staff Recognition Awards in 2001. Award recipients will be honored at a celebration on May 14 in the Michigan League.
