Urban and Regional Planning Assistant Professors Lan Deng and Suzanne Lanyi Charles presented papers at “Reclaiming the City: Building a Just and Sustainable Future,” the Urban Affairs Association Annual Conference in New Orleans, March 16-19, 2011.
Dr. Deng presented a paper titled “Has Housing Supply Gone Awry in China? An Examination of China’s Housing Production Function.” The paper focuses on whether China’s escalating housing price is a result of supply constraints, or a result of other factors. Dr. Charles presented a paper titled “Exploring the Contours of Suburban Gentrification” which outlines the case for and against the extension of the concept to include gentrification of suburban areas. Dr. Charles also moderated a paper session titled “Gentrification.”
Through theoretical, empirical, and action-oriented research, the UAA fosters diverse activities to understand and shape a more just and equitable urban world. These yearly conferences are an integral part of UAA’s efforts to increase knowledge about urban places and promote the development of research activities.
