Abstract

From its inception, social work has been closely linked to numerous professions and integration of knowledge is inherent for social work as a profession. The levels of collaboration among the professions are ordinarily divided into three: multidisciplinarity, interdisciplinarity, and transdisciplinarity. There are numerous examples of how deprived communities can benefit from multi-professional collaboration. In this chapter we provide several cases of inter-professional collaboration presenting various fields of cooperation accross the globe, including different forms and stakeholders. We specifically present practice experiences of how social workers have engaged in collaboration with urban planners in the field of housing, favela renewal, and supporting refugee communities. We additionally strengthen this connection by demonstrating the importance of dual degree programmes in social work and urban planning as the basis for sustainable transdisciplinary collaboration. Multi-professional collaboration is essential in deprived communities due to lack of resources. Furthermore, citizens can observe how collaboration can be built between professionals and engage in these projects. This could improve further social cohesion, citizens’ participation, and social capital. Finally, inter-professional collaboration helps professionals reduce the level of professional isolation, especially when working in remote, segregated, or sparsely populated areas.
