Why did you choose Taubman College as the right program for you?
As a Michigan native, I always knew I wanted to attend the University of Michigan. The school provides a wealth of resources, caters to students from diverse backgrounds, and truly prioritizes student success. While exploring my academic path, Taubman College stood out by offering prerequisites that I could take while I was an undeclared undergraduate in LSA. This allowed me to experience Taubman’s offerings firsthand before fully committing to the college.
What is special or excites you about the Taubman community?
Having been at Taubman for the past three years, it took me some time to feel fully comfortable with the community and the environment. What excites me most about Taubman is the openness of the people and their genuine desire to build connections. Recently, I’ve noticed a more diverse group of students joining, which has made Taubman feel even more welcoming and enriching.
If applicable, tell us about studio culture – what is inspiring or innovative or unique?
I’ve really enjoyed the studio culture over the past four semesters. Whether we’re traveling or not, everyone is incredibly welcoming and supportive, which makes the studio experience even more memorable. People are always respectful and accommodating, and that’s something I truly value. We joke, laugh, work together, and create memories that make studio life even more enjoyable.
Describe your experience with faculty and professional staff during your time at Taubman?
I’ve really enjoyed working with most of my professors so far. I often feel nervous at first, worrying they might not understand me or my passions, but with every meeting, they take the time to get to know me. They make me feel heard, valued, and supported. From the beginning, my professors have been there for me, offering continuous support throughout both my academic and professional journey.
How has Taubman’s career and professional development support prepared you for a successful career in your chosen field?
Taubman has provided me with countless opportunities and valuable guidance in preparing for my professional career. The workshops on resume building, cover letters, and portfolio development have been incredibly helpful. I’m especially grateful for the resources available through the Taubman College Career Network (TCCN), such as career fairs, job postings, scholarships, grants, and fellowship opportunities. This past summer, I secured an internship at my top local firm and also participated in a spring break externship at another nearby firm.
What benefits have you experienced being part of the University of Michigan?
One thing I am extremely grateful for is the opportunity to travel abroad. I first participated in the 2022 CDMX Spring Travel Course, and I loved every moment of it. For studio, I’ve been to Puerto Rico during my final year of undergrad, and I’m currently scheduled to go to India for my graduate propositions studio! These are places I never imagined visiting on my own, making these once-in-a-lifetime opportunities all the more meaningful. I’m glad Taubman offers a variety of study abroad options, both within and outside the curriculum, allowing students to experience learning beyond the typical classroom setting.
What do you like most about being part of the Ann Arbor community?
The Ann Arbor community definitely thrives on its ‘college town’ vibe, and experiencing that firsthand since coming to the University of Michigan has been memorable. Even after living on campus for five years, there are still parts of the city I’ve yet to discover—it has so much to offer. I also appreciate how, even though I live off campus, I’m close enough to feel connected. I feel safe walking home from class late or going out with friends for a quick boba run.
What advice would you give prospective students as they consider Taubman College?
Taubman definitely has a rigorous curriculum, so time management is key. Things can move quickly, but that shouldn’t deter you from pursuing your passions and interests. I can confidently say that, despite the stressful moments, I’ve genuinely enjoyed the work I’ve produced and have gained both technical and social skills along the way. Plus, you’ll eventually find a community or group where you belong at Taubman—it’s hard not to.
What are your plans after graduation?
After graduation, my plan is to start working full-time while also studying and working toward obtaining my license. I want to begin by gaining experience locally, with a focus on staying in the Metro Detroit area for now, and then work my way up from there.
