John Marshall’s creative and scholarly work is design research that results in both exhibitions and publications. Marshall’s research interests include: digital fabrication, tangible user interfaces, design methods, problem-based learning and communication between cross-disciplinary design teams.

Marshall’s studio practice involves a recursive process where multiple stakeholders work together to realize shared goals. Since 1998, Marshall has co-directed rootoftwo, LLC – a hybrid design studio. In 2014, rootoftwo partnered with DAUB (design; architecture; urbanism; building) to create r+d LAB, LLC located at the corner of 4th and Huron in downtown Ann Arbor.

Previously, Marshall worked as part of a collaborative product development team at consumer baby products manufacturer Evenflo Company, Inc. During this time Marshall was instrumental in transitioning the company to a rapid prototyping-based product development process. He has also taught 3D design at Leeds College of Art & Design in the UK.

Since coming to Michigan in 2008, Marshall has collaborated with both a rocket scientist and a brain surgeon (although not at the same time). He is currently writing a textbook with the title ’Introducing Hybrid Design’ for Routledge.

Marshall received a B.A. (Hons) from Glasgow School of Art; an M.F.A. from Ohio State University; an M.A. from Manchester Metropolitan University; and a Ph.D. from Robert Gordon University.
