Assistant Professor Newell wins ArtPrize juried award for charred wood installation, “Salvaged Landscape”

Architecture Assistant Professor Catie Newell was one of the ArtPrize juried award winners of 2011, announced October 6, 2011. Her piece, Salvaged Landscape, received the Best Use of Urban Space Award. Framed by the setting and pace of demolition, Salvaged Landscape appropriates the charred wood from a Detroit house hit by arson to create a new room, keying into the opportunities present in its own timeline. The project responds to the new textures, spaces, and light effects that resulted both from the fire and demolition. The installation was on location at the Grand Rapids Art Museum. ArtPrize is an international art contest whose winners are decided solely on a public vote. Held in Grand Rapids, MI, from Sept. 21-Oct. 9, 2011, ArtPrize also featured work from Taubman College Dean Monica Ponce de Leon, Professor Craig Borum, Assistant Professor Catie Newell, and Lecturers Ellie Abrons, Adam Fure and Maciej Kaczynski.
