Nahyun Hwang is a licensed architect and a founding partner of N H D M / Nahyun Hwang + David Eugin Moon, a collaborative practice for design and research in architecture and urbanism. N H D M's recent work includes the "Nam June Paik Library" that received the 2012 AIANY Design Honor Award, and "(No) Stop Marconi" currently being featured in 5th International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam.
Until joining the University of Michigan as a 2010 William Muschenheim Fellow and founding N H D M, Hwang practiced as a senior associate at James Corner Field Operations, and as the Lead Project Designer for The High Line, New York, heading the design effort of a multidisciplinary team of architects, landscape architects, and others for the project since 2004. She was also a Project Designer for the architectural elements for Fresh Kills, a 2,200 acre transformation of a former landfill into a public park, the University of Puerto Rico Rio Piedras Campus Master Plan, and a proposal for the Taichung Contemporary Music Center in Taiwan. Prior to the works at Field Operations, she practiced at the offices of Herzog & de Meuron; Stan Allen Architects; OMA/Rem Koolhaas; and at the studio of Rafael Moneo, contributing to a wide range of built and speculative projects, including the Walker Art Center expansion in Minneapolis, Minnesota; "La Reserva" housing prototypes in Chile, Santiago; the Dallas Arts District Master Plan and Dee and Charles Wyly Theater, Dallas, Texas; and the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, Los Angeles.
Hwang's research at the University of Michigan focuses on topics in alternative renewal paradigms for post-industrial and post/re-developmental conditions. She holds a Master's degree in Architecture from the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University (2001), and a Bachelor's degree in Architecture from Yonsei University, Seoul, Korea (1995), and is a registered architect in the state of Massachusetts.
