Alumni News: Marcy Giannunzio receives Emerging Architect Award from AIA Washington DC
Marcy Giannunzio (B.S.’02, M.Arch.’04) was recently selected as a recipient of the 2013 AIA Washington DC Emerging Architect Award. The award recognizes individuals of all ages who have shown exceptional leadership and made significant contributions to the profession in an early stage of their architectural career.
Most notably in 2012, beyond her role as Secretary of the AIA|DC Committee on the Environment (COTEdc), she designed and led the construction of the 2012 COTEdc Big Build Booth at the National Building Museum. Each year COTEdc constructs a booth for the Big Build event to teach children how to design a sustainable house using environmentally friendly materials. The booth, made from cardboard tubes donated from local architecture firms, was designed to be easy to transport, modular, and able to be erected each year.
In addition, Marcy Giannunzio’s work on the Sam Gilliam Art Studio project with Steven L. Spurlock, FAIA, LEED AP of WNUK SPURLOCK Architecture was recently awarded the 2012 AIA|DC Chapter Design Award of Excellence in Interior Architecture. Sam Gilliam is an internationally noted artist whose work is displayed in many museums, galleries, and public spaces throughout the US. The transformation from a former warehouse building to Art Studio was accomplished by inserting multiple programmatic freestanding interventions into the existing masonry structure. The resulting contrast of materials and juxtaposition of forms created an ideal space for the creation and display of the artist’s works.”
