Goodspeed’s work on Great Lakes Aquatic Habitat measurement tools published in Marine Policy
Assistant Professor Robert Goodspeed’s article titled “Applying design thinking methods to ecosystem management tools: Creating the Great Lakes Aquatic Habitat Explorer” will be published in Volume 69 of Marine Policy in July 2016. The article is a collaborative work by Goodspeed, Catherine Riseng, Kevin Wehrly, Wenting Yin, Lacey Mason and Benjamin Schoenfeldt.
The paper examines ecosystem management (EM) tools and their usability and salience for stakeholders in facilitating access to information and analysis. The case study applies new participatory design methods, known as design thinking, to create an EM tool called the Great Lakes Aquatic Habitat Explorer. The Great Lakes Aquatic Habitat Explorer was rated on its usability, usefulness and salience by participating and nonparticipating stakeholders who attended design workshops. The new tool was found to produce an environment of collaborative learning, authentic dialog and creativity among participants.
