Taubman College’s Zain AbuSeir has been awarded the University of Michigan’s 2026 Lecturer Excellence in Inclusive Teaching (LEIT) Award. Laurie McCauley, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs, bestowed AbuSeir, lecturer IV in architecture, with the award, which recognizes lecturers who demonstrate a sustained record of excellence in inclusive teaching practices.

The following summary was drawn from letters of support submitted for AbuSeir:

AbuSeir teaches architecture studios that foster inclusive, collaborative learning environments where students at all levels can meaningfully engage and contribute. Her teaching emphasizes multiple learning modes, peer-to-peer mentorship, and equitable participation, allowing students to build confidence while developing technical and creative skills. Through hands-on workshops, interdisciplinary collaboration, and project-based learning, she creates dynamic spaces that support diverse approaches to design and knowledge-building.

Her approach to teaching is grounded in a deep commitment to inclusion, mentorship, and intellectual rigor. AbuSeir cultivates a studio culture rooted in care and collaboration, integrating diverse perspectives by engaging with community partners, artists, scientists, and other practitioners. As a result, students develop strong design thinking skills, technical abilities, and confidence in presenting their ideas.

In addition to her teaching, AbuSeir contributes meaningfully to the broader academic community through leadership and service. As coordinator of the Wallenberg Studio, she guides students through a culminating design experience that connects architectural inquiry with ethical and civic responsibility.
