Stim-Scapes and Byplaces…

Patrick Wilton
Peter Halquist
Stim-Scapes and Byplaces…is the proposal of a movie theatre which identifies and attempts to reject the common tendency for architecture to operate within unhelpful binaries, with respect to how ability and disability are (or are not) accounted for in the built environment. This project forefronts needs and desires widely accepted by autistic individuals themselves, such as mediary byplaces and opportunities for “stimming” as key enhancers of the movie-going experience which are mutually beneficial to both neurodiverse and neurotypical individuals. Theatre program orientations, seating, and sensorial inputs are reimagined through occupiable elastomeric textiles and modular furnishings.
