- Life Cycle Analysis

Lars Junghans holds a diploma degree in architectural engineering at the Technical University of Braunschweig. His PhD study at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology ETH was scrutinized on façade system in different climate zones. As a post-doctoral fellow at UC Berkeley he developed a software tool for architects.
He's goal is to find the optimal intersection of esthetical, economical and technical aspects in architecture. Important for him is the holistic view to sustainable architecture design. An interdisciplinary approach to sustainable architecture is important to put the building design in a greater context. This includes an analysis of all energy consumers in a building like heating, cooling, warm water heating, ventilation and artificial lighting.
The research interest is focused on ways to find an optimal solution for "passive" and "active" building design strategies considering ecological, economical and technical aspects. This includes an analysis of the applicability of sustainable building certification methods like Passivhaus, Minergy and ENEV in different climate zones. A confrontation of initial economic and ecological efforts to the needs at building operation is essential to find appropriate assessment methods in all climates.
His past professional work includes a software development for Baumschlager Eberle Architects which is known for high quality sustainable architecture in all climate zones. The software is aimed to give recommendations for the first sustainable design steps. Recommendation will be given for passive and active design methods. It is based on a dynamic calculation process and delivers results in heating and cooling energy demand, primary energy demand, operation cost and CO2 emission.
As a consultant Lars Junghans was included in the planning process for sustainable design strategies and HVAC systems in international projects. Cooperation took place for architecture offices like Baumschlager Eberle, Kees Christiansen, Daniel Liebeskind, Burkhard Meyer, David Chipperfield and Crucowitz Nachbauer. International projects are realized in different countries like Austria, Luxemburg, Germany, Switzerland, China, Hong Kong, Turkey and India.
