Gregory J. Saldaña lectures in architecture at the University of Michigan Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning. He has taught design studio courses at the University of Miami School of Architecture including travel programs focused on the study of archaeological and historic sites in and around the cities of Sevilla, Spain and Athens, Greece. In 2005 he was the Harrison Visiting Scholar in Historic Preservation at Georgia Institute of Technology School of Architecture. He has degrees from the Rhode Island School of Design (Bachelor of Fine Arts & Bachelor of Architecture) and the University of Pennsylvania (Master of Science in Historic Preservation).
Saldana possesses a range of architectural conservation experience. During his internship at Vitetta he performed conditions assessment for the mall stair at the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC. Shortly after his graduate studies he was project designer for the restoration of the historic Colony Theatre located in the National Historic Art Deco District of Miami Beach. He has been responsible for the renovation of a 19th century row house, and project designer for the adaptive re-use of a power transfer station into television studios, both projects located in the City of Boston, Massachusetts. He completed a conservation plan for Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, a National Historic Landmark with funding from The Getty Grant Program.
Recently, he has focused on conservation treatment of a mid-century modern house and its immediate surrounding landscape and more recently was curator of two exhibitions concerning modern heritage in the State of Michigan. Constructing Modern highlighted the accomplishments of local architect Robert C. Metcalf. Modernism at Risk & Michigan Matters, a collaboration between Taubman College and World Monuments Fund, aimed at bringing to light the conservation challenges modern architecture faces today.
