Lan Deng's research and teaching interests are in the areas of housing, real estate, and local public finance. She is particularly interested in examining how government actions affect housing and urban development and how to design effective affordable housing policy. Prof. Deng has studied extensively the Low-income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) Program, the largest affordable housing production program in the United States. She has published work that examines the economic efficiency of the LIHTC program, how it compares with the alternative housing choice voucher program, and what neighborhood impacts the LIHTC-funded affordable housing projects have generated. More recently, Prof. Deng has expanded her research to examine housing market dynamics and housing policy issues in China. Prof. Deng is also a faculty associate for the Center for Chinese Studies at the University of Michigan.
Prof. Deng serves on the International Editorial Advisory Board for the journal of Housing Studies. She was also elected to the board of directors for the International Association for China Planning (IACP).
At the University of Michigan, Prof. Deng teaches UP537 (Housing Policy and Economics), UP568 (Real Estate and Urban Development), UP610 (Fiscal Planning and Management), and UP406 (Introduction to Geographic Information System).
Professor Deng holds a Ph.D. in city and regional planning (2004) from University of California, Berkeley, an M.S. (1999), and B.S. (1996) in geography from Peking University, China.
